Make sure the paint is free of dust and is dirt free before you open the lid. Painters Wellington use a flat screwdriver and try not to bend the rim too much After you open the tin give the paint a good stir with a clean stirrer to ensure all the paint is completely mixed.
Decant the paint into a smaller container or paint tray(and put the lid back on the paint tin), these will be much easier to carry around and will make sure that no dust gets into the paint tin ruining the paint.

Choose the decorating tool you want to work with ie Paintbrush, roller, paint pad depending on where you are painting and the finish you require.
The number of paint coats you apply comes down to the existing colour on the surface, the type of surface and the quality of paint you are working with.
It’s always better to apply two or three thin coats of paint rather than a single thick coat. It never pays to rush a paint job, always make sure the previous coat of paint is dry before applying another.
When painting a wall with a roller always ‘cut in’ the edges with a paintbrush to ensure coverage of the entire wall. This means painting a strip of paint around the walls, doors and skirting where the roller isn’t going to reach cleanly.
When using a roller start by working the roller in all directions and finish off with light strokes in a single direction. It is best to concentrate on a smaller patch of wall each time. Make sure the roller has no more paint on it before adding more. Remember not to roll to quickly or the paint will fly off the roller and leave blobs of paint on the surface.
Using a paint pad to apply paint is much the same as using a roller but the paint pad will give a thinner application. Paint pads a good for running along wall edges but you will still need to use a brush for trickier spots.
Taping paintwork.
Painting can never be a rush job, if you don’t prep the areas you are painting throughly you will pay for it in the long run. There are many things that can go wrong with your paint finish and the cause can generally be put down to poor preparation of the surface.
One preparation area that will be a bit time consuming but will pay off for a fantastic finish is taping around the glass of your window or door panes. Place strips of masking tape( or specific tape from a hardware store) along the edges of the glass where they meet the woodwork. Leave a narrow strip of paint on the glass to form a seal. Using a thin brush apply paint in the direction of the grain. Make sure you peel the tape off as soon as the paint is dry before it becomes to difficult to remove.
Good painters will do all these things for a good paint finish. Please check out our site for more tips on Painters Wellington
